Academic Year

Most schools In Italy begin their term in the month of September. In primary schools and secondary schools, each academic year is divided into two semesters.

Typically, the first semester -begins from September and extends till February and the second semester goes on from February to June.

Kindergartens also follow similar schedules.

In universities, the academic year is also divided into two semesters which are usually 14 – 20 weeks long.  First semester typically begins in October and ends in February. The second semester extends from March to  July.
In Italian universities, September is the main  exam month. During the exam months (February, July or September), students are allowed to take any exam of their choice on courses they couldn't pass or to improve their previous scores.

Medium of Instruction

The principal language used in academic institutions is Italian. It is also the official language in government and public institutions. Many schools and universities in Italy are bilingual now; they use both Italian as well as English as medium of instructions.

Though many universities offer courses in English, all international students at some point of their education in Italy are required to prove their proficiency in Italian. If a student can provide a valid document of competency in Italian, he / she is exempted from an exam on Italian.
