Admission Requirement for Bachelor's, Master's and Doctorate in Italy

Admissions in Italian universities are administered by the Ministry of University and Research (MIUR) in accordance with the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Italian higher education includes three cycles of study- 
  • First Cycle (Primo Ciclo) includes Bachelor program(Corso di Laurea) and Single-cycle Degree (Corso di Laurea Magistrale a Ciclo Unico)
  • Second Cycle (Secondo Ciclo) inlcudes Master program (Corso di Laurea Magistrale) and 1st Level vocational master (Master Universitario di Primo Livello)
  • Third Cycle (Terzo Ciclo) includes Doctorate  (Dottorato di Ricerca), Specialisation School (Scuola di Specializzazione) and 2nd Level vocational master (Master Universitario di Secondo Livello)

Admission Requirements for the First Cycle-Undergraduate Program

The first cycle of university studies includes three-year bachelor program and a Single-Cycle degree program. The prerequisite for admittance to the first cycle degree programs is a secondary school diploma or an equivalent foreign qualification.

Admission Requirements for the Second Cycle- Postgraduate Program

Second cycle courses consisting the master programs and 1st level vocational master courses.
The admission prerequisite for the second cycle degree program is a bachelor degree or an equivalent foreign qualification.

Admission Requirement for Third Cycle- Doctorate Program

Third cycle comprises Doctorate, Specialisation Schools and 2nd Level Vocational Masters.
The prerequisite for admission to the third cycle programs is a 2nd level degree- a master’s degree or an equivalent foreign qualification. 

For Vocational Master’s: For admittance to a 1st Level vocational master program, the applicant must have a bachelors' degree or an equivalent foreign qualification, and for admittance to a 2nd Level vocational master program, one must possess a master degree or an equivalent foreign qualification. The Vocational master’s course has a limited number of seats and requires applicants to pass an entrance tests to grab a seat in the course.

Admission Requirements for Advanced Courses

Advanced Courses are training course that permits pupils to enhance their skills and knowledge for a career. For admission to the advanced courses, the applicant must hold a bachelor degree, a master’s degree or an equivalent foreign qualification. 

Admission Requirements for Single Courses

Students desiring to expand their knowledge base can go for Single course at the Universities. To be admitted to a single course, an applicant must have one of the following qualifications: a secondary school diploma, a bachelor degree, a master’s degree or an equivalent foreign qualification.

Applying Ways and Means

Before applying for a university course, applicants must have completed 12 years of study. 
  • European and Non-EU students in Italy with a current valid residence permit and natives of Norway, Lichtenstein, Iceland, and San Marino can apply to the Italian universities like Italian citizens. They need to submit their admission application directly to the University of choice, along with the documentation.
  • Non-EU students must submit a pre-application request to the Italian Embassy or Consulate in their country of residence. 

General Documentation

When applying for a university course in Italy, you must put in your qualification and the required documentation along with your admission application. All qualifications must be translated into Italian by an official translator and certified by the authorities of the country in which they were issued. Each qualification must be supplemented by a Certificate of Equivalence of Qualification, issued by the Italian diplomatic representation in the country in which the qualification was given.
The following documents are required:
  • A secondary school diploma: Translated and validated by the Italian Embassy
  • Dichiarazione di valore in loc (DV) Document: The DV is an official document giving a little explanation of an academic or professional qualification the student has attained.
  • University degree: Translated in Italian (In case of second and third cycle degrees)
  • An official transcript: It should describe the courses studied and grades obtained and must be translated and attested by the Italian Embassy.
  • Form A (for non-EU citizen resident abroad)
  • A Copy of a valid identity card or passport
  • Payment receipt
  • Valid Residence Permit (for non-EU citizens)
Contact the secretariat (Segreteria Studenti Stranieri) of the preferred Italian institution to make certain that you are fulfilling all admission prerequisites, such as an application form, documentation to be enclosed, application deadlines and entrance exam (if any), certification of competency in the Italian language and so on. 

Language Proficiency Evidence

  • Italian Language Proficiency (For Non- EU Students): Non-EU citizens resident overseas are required to take an Italian language test before taking admission into Italian Institutions.
  • The Certification of Italian as a Foreign Language (Certificazione di Italiano come Lingua Straniera or CILS) is acknowledged by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and is used by many Italian Higher education Institutions as an Italian language proficiency proof. 
  • The Certificate of Knowledge of Italian Language (Certificato di Conoscenza della Lingua Italiana, CELI) is an internationally recognized qualification intended for the foreigners to demonstrate their Italian language competency.
